A small study comparing the cost of Prilosec and Nexium at three major U. S. drugstores, along with Costco’s price of $4.45 a box, might suggest that the prices for the drugs could be different for each retailer, but it’s not clear.
According to a, the prices for Prilosec and Nexium at Costco are $3.83 and $4.45, respectively. Costco is a popular drugstore that carries a wide range of brand-name prescription drugs and is known for its commitment to quality and safety.
But the results from the study are not in time for a generic version of Prilosec or Nexium. Both the Prilosec and Nexium drugs are over-the-counter, meaning their active ingredients are available from a variety of sources, including pharmacies, online retailers and health food stores.
“While Prilosec may seem like an obvious choice for many, there are some potential drawbacks to opting for a generic version of Prilosec. Generic Prilosec tablets may cost a little more than the brand-name version, but generic Prilosec can still be considered a cost-effective alternative,” says David Zuckerman, a professor at Harvard Business School and coauthor of the study.
Zuckerman notes that while generic Prilosec can be obtained from several sources, Costco’s price is a little lower. Costco offers a range of Prilosec, ranging from $3.83 to $4.45 per box. It’s the same price as many major retailers, Zuckerman notes.
“Prilosec’s price may be more competitive because it has a higher availability, but that is only one aspect, and Costco’s price isn’t a realistic substitute,” Zuckerman says. “Prilosec and the generic version are not interchangeable, but the Costco price may be a little more attractive to consumers, if they want to save money.”
“Nexium and Prilosec are both popular brand-name prescription medications, and they are both generic, which may explain the difference in prices. However, the Nexium brand is slightly higher than Prilosec, so Costco isn’t likely to offer a lower price. It will likely be a bit higher, but it will be enough to be worth it,” Zuckerman says.
The study looked at Costco’sPrilosec and the Nexium brand at CVS. It did not find the same amount of savings in the Prilosec compared to the Nexium brand, and Costco’s price was also slightly higher. “We don’t see the savings in pricing, but Costco’s price will likely make this comparison a better deal for consumers,” Zuckerman says.
Both Costco and CVS are chains that operate primarily through food and drug stores. The chain has a slightly lower price for Prilosec compared to Nexium. But the savings are not great, Zuckerman says. “Prilosec and the generic are essentially the same medication, and it is likely to be the same price for consumers.”
“Prilosec has the biggest price drop in the Prilosec brand, but Nexium has the lowest price. Nexium has a slightly lower price because it is over-the-counter and has a slightly different formula. This is the same difference that customers would see with Prilosec and other prescription medications,” Zuckerman says.
Prilosec, which is available without a prescription to Americans who cannot afford the brand-name medication, is an over-the-counter medication. Its active ingredient, esomeprazole, is available without a prescription.
“Prilosec is a safe and effective treatment for patients,” Zuckerman says. “It is also one of the most affordable prescription medications. It can cost anywhere from $2.27 to $1.39 per month.”
Nexium, which is available without a prescription to Americans who cannot afford the brand-name drug, is also available in the form of a tablet. The drugmaker has a lower price for the drug than many retailers, Zuckerman notes.
